This e-mail comes later than I had intended. I just wanted to say again how glad I was that I asked you to do the translation for the wedding ceremony I conducted recently in Cologne. The couple were delighted with the words, the guests full of praise – “every word mattered” was a frequent comment. There was just the right balance of seriousness, pathos, and humour…. the latter mostly due to spontaneous moments, but for me supported by knowing I had the safety of coming back to a very confident script.

Thank you for your translation. It wasn’t until I had given my speech and my German guests have come to thank me for such an excellent translation that I fully understood… For it was then that it occurred to me that it was my guests who were your ultimate audience, and I was merely the conduit! Your translation was well received in particular by the German elderly great-grandmother who was formerly a teacher of English.
I was also grateful for the spoken version, the mp3. While my spoken German was delivered in the inimitable faltering tones of the Englishman-abroad, it was much appreciated by the German speakers and I got the ‘points’ for trying.

I just wanted to say thanks again for a fantastic job on the Best Man’s speech. The written translation went down very well – the Bride’s father read it again later in the evening and was laughing again then – he was really pleased as he speaks no English. I managed to speak a good proportion of the speech in German and, thanks to your excellent mp3, I am told it was easy to understand. Several of the German guests said they were only familiar with Best Man’s speeches from Hugh Grant movies (!) and so found the whole thing great fun.

The speech went really well, the Germans absolutely loved my German section, I think they were really surprised by it and your recording helped massively on that front I am sure. The rest of the speech was shared in paper form amongst the guests, it also translated really well so I am told. The wedding of my daughter and my son in law was a great experience – not only for the bridal couple but also for the parents, families and all the guests. One of the highlights of this wonderful celebration was the father of the bride’s wedding speech. For almost everyone present it came as a big surprise that I was giving the speech in English. My daughter and my son in law were completely surprised and absolutely thrilled… they clearly had never ever expected this. Again and again not only the bridal couple but also many of the foreign guests – even some from England (London) – commented on the superb translation and wording of the speech as well as on my accurate characterisation of my daughter.
Of course, prior to the wedding, I had been practicing the correct English pronunciation over and over again with the help of the audio file (mp3 recording) and I succeeded extremely well as could be seen from the reaction of all the guests!
I would like to thank you again with all my heart for your excellent work since your translation really contributed to this celebration being a huge success and could not have been better. I would gladly recommend you to others.

As I said in my earlier mail, the files have arrived safely, and although yes I have Mac computers, they can open Word files, but how clever of you to bear Mac use in mind.
What a wonderful job you’ve made of the translation! That together with the MP3 recording makes for a superb package, thank you so much for making my life much, much easier. Once again my thanks for the quick turnaround, I can spend this afternoon practicing and then again on Sunday.
It was fascinating for me to compare my provisional German text with yours, which only made me realise a) how long it has been since I last used (good) German on a daily basis, and b) how glad I was to get in touch with you!
After recording and playing the speech back I realised that some of my Black Forest accentuation is still with me, and I shall have to cut down on saying “gel?” now and again! But old habits may die hard, and when in Rome . . . . .
Your intonations are just right, though one or two will be a tad more emphasised, to make it easier some elder members in the family to realise a point has been made.
